Spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations with the European Commission Maja Kocijancic confirmed to Banja Luka-based daily Nezavisne novine that the EU would decide on the next steps with regards to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s application for membership in the Union only after the appointment of the new European Commission.
This means, according to daily, that relevant decisions are not likely to be made until the beginning of 2020.
Kocijancic said that the outgoing European Commission would carry out review and assess the country’s readiness to start moving towards the status of the EU Candidate Country.
Furthermore, according to Kocijancic, implementation of reforms necessary for joining the EU is of crucial importance, and political leaders need to complete the job related to formation of authorities at all levels “through constructive cooperation and in the interest of people in Bosnia and Herzegovina”.
“The Opinion we are preparing with regards to country’s application will be based on answers we have received from authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our intention is to present the Opinion by the end of May”, said Kocijancic.
