Luis Suarez took advantage of Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais’ mistake in the 23rd minute to score what would turn out to be the only goal of the game.
That was Barcelona striker’s 52nd international goal in his 100th appearance for La Celeste.
Uruguay’s victory over Saudi Arabia eliminated Saudis and Egyptians and ensured that hosts Russia also advanced to the next round.
In Group B, Cristiano Ronaldo once again saved the day for Portugal, scoring the winner against Morocco at the Luzhniki Stadium to eliminate the North Africans.
Moroccans dominated large parts of the game, but were unable to penetrate stern Portuguese defense.
Elsewhere in Group B, lucky deflection helped Diego Costa net his third goal in two games, as Spain defeated Iran 1-0 to come within a point of reaching the round of 16.
