The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is planning to significantly increase funds in the next five years for construction of wind and solar farms, because they see strong potential in this sector.

We see strong potential of solar and wind resources in most of the Balkan region, and even though it is difficult to predict the amount of funds the EBRD plans to use in the next five years, we can certainly expect significant increase for wind and solar farms”, said EBRD’s regional director for the Western Balkans Zsuzsanna Hargitai.

In December 2018, the EBRD called on the Western Balkan countries to drastically decrease the use and production of coal and focus on renewable energy sources. According to EBRD, the Western Balkan countries are too dependent on coal and their outdated power plants.
