Media in Bosnia and Herzegovina speculate that Sarajevo could become one of the venues in Barcelona’s bid to hold the Winter Olympic Games in 2030.
Chairman of the Olympic Committee of Bosnia and Herzegovina Izet Radjo confirmed the information for Sarajevo-based daily newspaper Dnevni avaz.
“We’ve been in contact with people from Barcelona, who have also talked with representatives of the City and the Sarajevo Canton. Proposal from Barcelona is that certain Olympic events, which cannot be organized in Barcelona, are organized in Sarajevo. So far, we are talking about bobsleigh, luge and skeleton, but why not ski jumping as well”, Radjo said.
Three cities have so far expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Winter Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee said on Friday.
Barcelona, Salt Lake City in the United States and the northern Japanese city of Sapporo are the three cities to have registered their interest, according to Octavian Morariu, head of the IOC’s evaluation commission.
Sapporo and Salt Lake City have already hosted the Winter Games, in 1972 and 2002 respectively, while Barcelona hosted the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
Reports suggest that options for the Barcelona bid include holding the skiing events in the principality of Andorra. With no ski jump in the Pyrenees, those events could be organized in Sarajevo, and unnamed source close to the affair confirmed.
