Slovakian Minister of Foreign Affairs and former High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Miroslav Lajcak is expected to be named the United Nations’ new special envoy for disputed Western Sahara, France 24 reported on Thursday.

The post has been vacant since May 2019, when former German president Horst Köhler stepped down for health reasons.

Lajcak’s nomination should be confirmed in the coming weeks, according to diplomats who insisted on remaining anonymous.

Media and public in the Western Balkan countries have been speculating over the past several weeks that Lajcak might be appointed as the EU Special Representative for the Western Balkans.
